Mystery Of Droid Autofocus Conspiracy Solved (For Reals This Time)

The problem: users have complained about the autofocus feature on the Droid since day one. As in, it didn’t work (video). Last night I wrote that some users found a fix – clean the lens. It turns out that probably didn’t do a darn thing.

But there were even better conspiracy theories out there, such as Engadget’s idea of a secret software update, which quickly spread around the Internet.

It turns out that wasn’t true, either. And we’ve confirmed that there’s no such thing as a secret software update on Android phones anyway, at least according to people at Google. Updates, even security updates, must be approved for installation by the user.

So what was the real reason for the problem, and the fix? Well, it fixed itself. The problem, as MobileCrunch duly noted, was an issue with the phone’s timestamp: “According to Google Engineer Dan Morrill, there is an unfortunate bug in the Droid’s autofocus routine. It improperly rounds a timestamp used in the calculations, which somehow throws the entire focusing process off. Today it works, and tomorrow it will work…but 24.5 days from now, the bug will be back.”

But by the time the problem cycles back again, Verizon will have pushed out a fix for the problem.

As we say around the office, Android is freedom from the iPhone. But sometimes that freedom feels a little bit like this:

First Look: WhatsApp Dominik Pietsch, 16.11.09, 20:55

There’s a lot of buzz about iPhone IM clients.Other applications have gotten a lot of coverage for allowing iPhones to chat from their AOL, Google, ICQ, Jabber or a host of other screen names.

WhatsApp [iTunes Link] is different, calling itself an “iPhone-to-iPhone chat application” that provides direct messaging between iPhones. The application features push notifications and provides functionality similar to SMS.

So why bother trying it? The app makes it easy to chat with other iPhones with no need for screen names, logging in and out or the added cost of text messaging and cellular charges. It’s a lot like an iPhone version of Blackberry’s popular messaging service. You’ll also quickly and easily be able to point out which of your contacts have WhatsApp installed. Even if you’re offline, your messages will be saved until you’re back online.

Other cool features include the ability to “Broadcast” or send a message to multiple users, emailing of your chat history and sound and visual badges to show your unread message count. Users can also see when their friends are typing as well as the last time they checked their messages.

WhatsApp is free “for a limited time” so head on over to the App Store and grab it.

Here’s a few shots of the app in action:

Digital Tattoo Interface Turns Your Skin Into A Display [This Cyborg Life] Dominik Pietsch, 14.11.09, 11:46

via Gizmodo by Rosa Golijan on 11/10/09

There are implants which are purely aesthetic, and then there’s the Digital Tattoo Interface concept. It’s a blood-powered electronic interface which is embedded under skin to mimic a tattoo, display videos, or act as a phone or computer.

As great as it seems, this concept is seriously creepy because it powers itself by converting the glucose and oxygen found in blood into electricity. Though somehow getting your blood sucked by a gadget is worth it for the endless potential applications. I’d probably just end up using it to moderate comments, but what would you do first with your implant? [Core77 via Geekologie]

This week, Gizmodo is exploring the enhanced human future in a segment we call This Cyborg Life. It’s about what happens when we treat our body less as a sacred object and more as what it is: Nature’s ultimate machine.

Safari 4.0.4: Verbesserungen und gestopfte Schwachstellen Dominik Pietsch, 12.11.09, 00:31

via fscklog von Leo am 11.11.09

safari4.0.4.jpg

The iPhone and the WiiMote Dominik Pietsch, 11.11.09, 15:25

via The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) von Erica Sadun am 10.11.09

Matthias Ringwald, of iPhone Bluetooth fame, has just released BTstack 0.1 for iPhone. This video demonstrates his group’s technology in action, as an iPhone syncs with a WiiMote and then uses the WiiMote for input. Although the system does not yet have OBEX, it is, as Ringwald writes, “better than Apple’s nothing.”

I haven’t had a chance to give the software a spin yet (you can download the source from Google Code) but I’m looking forward to playing. BTstack creates device connections using the L2CAP protocol. The code is currently aimed at jailbroken devices only. It supplies a Bluetooth daemon (BTdaemon) that you access from your apps. Given that the release is still only at version 0.1, expect a certain degree of instability and a lot of further development potential.
